Notes for the November NFB Kalamazoo meeting

Tyler opens the meeting.
Those present were Matt Mccubbin, Doug and Christine Boone, Megan O’Rourke,
Emily and Mike Curl, and JJ. The minutes
were received by email and were approved.
The agenda was sent out via the email mailing list. The agenda was approved. The president, Vice
president, treasurer, and secretary had nothing to report. Our gift basket
brought us $18 at the state convention.
We now have an Ann Arbor chapter of the NFB. Tyler moved on to old business. The state convention was in October in
Dearborn at the Double tree hotel. There
was a scavenger hunt with two teams in Limos with drivers. There were 12 youth members present. There were around 100+ members at the
convention. Matt spoke about the
Washington Seminar. He explained 500 or
600 people from around the country travel to Washington D.C. at the end of
January to create a forum to discuss specific blindness related issues. Last year they discussed quiet cars and
access to technology. He also added that
the affiliates will help pay for the hotel stay. Those interested will need to
find transportation to WADC. This
finishes old business. We discussed the
social event at the goalball tournament.
Tyler’s idea was to offset the price of the refreshments by adding a
small fee for the pizza and soda. We
would also hand out informational brochures about the NFB. This creates a positive introduction to the
NFB to the community. The idea of
selling or giving away other food such as hot dogs/cookies was brought up.
Tyler introduced the idea of teaming with the hotel or goalball association to
offer a $5 option attached to each person’s registration that would cover the
meal provided by the NFB. Tyler asked for volunteers to assist with this
fundraiser. The Michigan State convention will be held in Kalamazoo. There is an offer from the newly remodeled
Clarion Hotel of $79.99 a night. There will be no charge for the meeting
rooms. JJ and Doug will be going to the
site to decide if it would be a quality location. Doug and Christine wanted to inquire about
hosting the event at the Radisson in downtown Kalamazoo. There are many restaurants in house which
would make it very accessible. JJ and
Doug will inquire further regarding the Radisson. Christine discussed her
arbitration. Tyler made a motion to dismiss the meeting. The motion was seconded and approved.
