Hello Friends:
I recently returned from LWSB after an evaluation to qualify for LWSB's ESP program. This program will give me a Microsoft Certified Program Developer (MCPD) certification and training in Java and C#.net (The last two items are modern computer languages.). I am writing as I thought you would want to know of current goings on at LWSB.
The buildings were built in the #50's with one I think built in the #70's. Given their age, the buildings are in reasonable repair and are kept very clean. The current location at 2811 Fair Park is on the edge of a bad part of town, so students are not encouraged to leave campus except in a vehicle. The buildings have been joined together and the campus entrance is closed with a gate that is locked at night. I was at LWSB from April 20 through May 1. The air-conditioning was off during the first week so the dorm rooms and other buildings were uncomfortably warm. Students who have dorm rooms on the ground floor are strongly encouraged to keep their windows closed especially at night in order to deter break-ins.
The staff are friendly and helpful and will provide directions and/or guidance for those students who need assistance. Students who use wheelchairs have quite a challenge since the buildings have lots of stairs. In my opinion, the facility is minimally accessible. Wheelchair students stay on the ground floors of dorms and there are elevators so students can reach most of the facility. I did not see any electrified doors and no automatic doors.
As for my evaluation, the staff generally asked me about myself and took my word that I could do what I said I could do. I did demonstrate that I could make a bed, pack a suitcase, hang up a pair of slacks and shirt, sew on a button, cook a meal, and remove a pan from an oven. I was tested for keyboarding speed, braille, the use of a simple calculator, the use of JAWS and the use of a cane.
On Thursday April 30, everyone learned that the president of LWSB Ramona Sangalli had been removed by the board. A search is underway for a new president.
