Fellow Lions, I thought that you would like to read the exchange
between the undersigned and our district governor regarding our radio
program. It goes without saying that, when I know when we will be on
the radio, I'll let you folks know in plenty of time. Lion Paul

Mr. Gerlach,
I am the District Governor of Lions Clubs in the Baltimore Metropolitan
area and was provided your contact information by Lion Paul Smith in the
email below. Lion Paul tells me that there may be an opportunity to
participate in one of your upcoming Insight on Disability segments. Lions
have a long history of supporting vision programs, going almost all the way
back to our founding in 1917. It was Helen Keller who challenged Lions in
1925 to becomes "Knights" in the crusade to end blindness and we have been
responding.
I'd welcome the opportunity to participate in a future program to
discuss some of the ongoing efforts of local Lions associated vision
services. Today provides a perfect example of some of the things Lions do
in the way of vision services. This morning, we had more than 60
individuals converge on the MD School for the Blind to sort eyeglass that
had been collected over the past 6 months. We sorted and prepared more 1500
lbs (estimated to be more than 5000 pairs of glasses) to be shipped to a
regional Lions recycling center in VA. Also this morning we had two Lions
clubs conducting vision screenings at a Homeless Help event in Anne Arundel
County and provide vouchers for free eye exams and glasses for qualifying
individuals. Finally, this evening, we are expecting a crowd of more than
70 for a meal and presentation by a Leader Dog ambassador. Leader Dog was
founded by 3 Lions in the late 1930s and breeds, trains, and provides dog
guides for the blind. Representatives from clubs will be in attendance to
make their annual donations of support and we expect to raise nearly
$10,000.
Sorry to be so verbose, but it is a very exciting (and busy!) day for
our Lions across the District. I would welcome the opportunity to join you
on a future program and hope that you will consider me for a guest
appearance. Contrary to Lion Paul's thoughts of phoning in, I'd be happen
to join you in the studio. Thanks for considering me.

Larry Burton
District Governor, 22-A
