Hello All,
I am a new member to this list and as my life goes, I generally do something
because I have a specific need. Though not a member of the Lions myself, I
will likely join sometime, one of our chapter members is a member and he is
new to NFB, Lions and blindness, within the last 3-4 years. Anyway, the hope
is that the Lions club here will be able to bring a Beep Baseball team up
here from Washington State to Alaska to play a semipro baseball team and
raise money for the little non-profit agency, the Alaska Center for the
Blind and Visually Impaired. As the Chapter President, I want to support
this but our chapter member sent me the flyer they want to use and I would
like to change it so that it reflects more of what the NFB represents though
we are not doing anything more than probably playing when the time comes.
Personally, I struggle with sighted people being blindfolded to play running
sports because, unless they are cheating, they won't really enjoy it, I
wouldn't think. Perhaps some of you have more experience with this and maybe
I'm totally off base here. Right now, the thing that concerns me is the
flyer and I'd like your opinion as to how it can be changed to say what need
to be said without creating pity. Is that possible. Please see the wording
of the flyer below-

Our Mission:
Promote Lions Clubs involvement within our community and the infectious joy
it offers.

BASEBALL FOR ALL!
Objective
Our objective is to promote Lions, raise funds and attract new members into
our clubs. As well as increase awareness about the endeavors and
perseverance of the physically challenged.
The Idea
To provide a club sponsored event that includes a beep-baseball game between
a legitimate Beep team and a local semiprofessional team. The initial game
would be held here in Anchorage and perhaps teaming with a local club in
Alaska to help offset cost.
We'd market the game as a fun and inspirational event teaming with
The Center for the Blind and a local ABL team.

"Handicapable...
The chapter member sent this to me because he immediately had problems with
the words, "physically challenged." Of course there are a couple of other
things I don't like about it but I was wondering if Lions Clubs generally
tolerate us trying to get a different message out there?
Thanks for all your help.
Regards,
Bonnie
