There are several ways of discovering other users that you might want to follow but how you actually perform these actions depends on what Mastodon client or program you are using to access the platform.

First, once you find people of interest to follow you will find that they often repost messages from others that they find interesting. As an example, I might repost messages from others about assistive technology. Once you see those reposted messages you may want to follow the original person whose message I reposted. You could also check to see who is following someone or who they are following and then follow some of those people. Some programs tend to not show the entire list of followers or those who are following that person. The iPhone app Mona is a bit better about this than other apps might be and I highly recommend Mona for any iPhone users. It’s flexible, does just about everything you probably need and its level of accessibility and customization is just thrilling and the app is a joy to use.

For Windows my Mastodon client of choice is Tweesecake. It not only has a Windows version but there are versions for silicon and Intel-based Mac computers. I personally love Tweesecake and am very used to it but it might be off-putting for some people because you don’t run a typical installer the way that you would for other programs. Instead, you have to unzip it into a folder and then run the Tweesecake executable. This also means that you may want to place a shortcut to the program on your desktop. You can also optionally assign a shortcut key to run the program. This is what I’ve done so that when I want to open Tweesecake I just press a shortcut key and the program opens. For experienced Windows users all of this will be a piece of cake, pun not exactly intended. For those who are new to Windows I acknowledge this probably sounds pretty daunting. I believe you also need to set up an account with Tweesecake in order to use the program. I’m not referring to a Mastodon account but an account to unlock or access the program.

If you’re looking for a more straightforward program where you can just run an installer and just start using the program try TWBlue. TWBlue has a lot of similarities to Tweesecake but I’m more familiar with Tweesecake.

If anyone is interested in following me on Mastodon my handle is

@davidgoldfield@rcsocial.net

I follow a lot of users who are also blind with many being technology enthusiasts. Therefore, if that’s the type of person you’re wanting to follow your Mastodon client will hopefully be able to show you both who I’m following as well as who follows me.

If you have follow-up questions please don’t hesitate to ask. I would respectfully ask that questions about this be sent publicly to this list and not to me privately as I don’t have enough time to provide individual support. If you ask about this on the list not only can I answer if I am able to do so but you’ll be widening the net for others to help, as well.

David Goldfield,

Blindness Assistive Technology Specialist

NVDA Certified Expert

Subscribe to the Tech-VI announcement list to receive news, events and information regarding the blindness assistive technology field.

Email: tech-vi+subscribe@groups.io

www.DavidGoldfield.com

From: NFB-Mastodon <nfb-mastodon-bounces@nfbnet.org> On Behalf Of Jim Portillo via NFB-Mastodon
Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2023 4:26 PM
To: 'Mastodon Support List for NFB Members and our Friends' <nfb-mastodon@nfbnet.org>
Cc: Jim Portillo <portillo.jim@gmail.com>
Subject: Re: [NFB-Mastodon] Getting Started with Mastodon

OK. It should be possible to search for one that focuses specifically on literature and maybe specifically one for authors. I haven’t looked, but it’s worth a try.

Think about instances in the way you think about all the different internet domains that can host email. You may have GMail, Outlook, iCloud, or any other host for your own email address, but that doesn’t prevent you from emailing people whose email addresses aren’t on the same domain (the stuff after the at sign) that yours is. It just means that you have a specific address, part of which is that domain. Instances work the same way. Once you pick one, you can follow anyone on any other instance, and they can follow you. A lot of people are struggling with which instance to select, but in an important sense, it does not matter. If you don’t like the instance you first join, you can join another one; in fact you can maintain accounts on more than one. If you’re really not sure, then I think a good suggestion is to consider Mastodon.social or Tweesecake.social. Mastodon.social is a good general one that isn’t tied to any specific topic. Tweesecake.social is quite popular with the blind community. The real think to know is that whatever decision you make in this regard, it is not written in stone, and it doesn’t block you from connecting with others. As far as how to search for a server for your permanent (or temporary) home base, here’s one good place to start, and others have been suggested on this list: https://joinmastodon.org/servers

Warmly,

Chris

From: NFB-Mastodon <nfb-mastodon-bounces@nfbnet.org> On Behalf Of Sherry Gomes via NFB-Mastodon
Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2023 9:16 AM
To: Mastodon Support List for NFB Members and our Friends <nfb-mastodon@nfbnet.org>
Cc: Sherry Gomes <sherry.gomes@outlook.com>
Subject: Re: [NFB-Mastodon] Getting Started with Mastodon

You’re not late to the party. I’ve been completely baffled about mastodon for months. Now that twitter isn’t usable for us, on the computer specifically, I’ve lost contact with many followers and those I follow, both on my personal and my author profile. Social media is crucial for my work as an author, as a place for fans to reach me, and as a way to follow other authors, writing resources and more. Not to mention the personal followers I have there and nowhere else. But for the life of me, I’m befuddled by mastodon and the concept of having different servers, how to sign up, how to find people and feeds of interest, the whole bit.
