the Manchester Transit Authority will be running buses between Concord and
the
Manchester Boston Regional Airport.
By GARRY RAYNO State House Bureau - Beginning July 1, the Manchester Transit
Authority
will be running buses between Concord and the Manchester Boston Regional
Airport.
The Capital Budget Overview Committee approved the use of Turnpike toll
credits
to
cover the state's share to leverage other federal money for the one-year
duration
while a corridor study is done to determine the best long-term strategies to
address
the need. The total project costs $160,000, with the state using $80,000 of
the
credit
it receives for maintaining federal highways such as Interstate 93 or
Interstate
95. According to information from the Department of Transportation, the
buses
will
travel between Concord bus station on Stickney Avenue to the airport,
stopping
at
Veteran's Park in Downtown Manchester. The buses will run Monday through
Friday
making
12 trips daily beginning at 3:30 a.m. with the last trip ending at 12:45
a.m.
the
next day. Seven of the 12 trips will stop at Veterans Park while five will
be
express
trips between Concord and the airport. Tickets will cost $4 a day or $2 a
day
for
those older than 65 years old or those with a valid Medicare or MTA Half
Fare
identification
card. The bus service "will greatly enhance the connectivity between New
Hampshire's
largest and third-largest cities/economies and the State's largest airport
while
offering a connection point at Stickney Avenue to the population north of
Concord,"
wrote Sens. Sylvia Larsen, D-Concord, and David Boutin, R-Hooksett, in a
letter
to
the committee urging the use of the credits for the project. This new,
regularly
scheduled service would provide air travelers from the Concord area with
better
access
to the airport and would also offer arriving passengers increased
connectivity
to
the Capital Region," writes Mark Brewer, airport director, in a letter
supporting
the project. Our enplaning passenger surveys reveal that the City of Concord
is
the
fourth highest ranking origin city of New Hampshire air travelers utilizing
the
airport.
The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce also supported the project in a
letter
to the committee. grayno at unionleader.com .
