"Investing in America: Accessibility for All"

As the opening ceremonies for the 2024 Summer Paralympic Games commence in Paris, the U.S. Department of Transportation is releasing a new episode of its Investing in America video series. The video, titled “ <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=1f1b2306a9&e=7ae6290504> Accessibility for All,” highlights how even for some of the greatest athletes in the world and a sitting U.S. Senator, basic transportation can still be a challenge – and what the Biden-Harris Administration is doing to fix that.

Featuring Matt Scott, a former five-time Paralympian and gold medalist in men’s wheelchair basketball, Dr. Anjali Forber-Pratt, a two-time Paralympian and bronze medalist in women’s wheelchair racing, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the video focuses on how the Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is making once-in-a-generation investments to improve our transportation systems for millions of Americans with limited mobility and disabilities.

With over 60,000 projects and counting, the infrastructure bill represents one of the largest investments in the history of the United States to increase accessibility, by ensuring new infrastructure has curb cuts, building more accessible airports, and adding elevators to some of our nation’s oldest transit stations. And through the stories of Senator Duckworth, Matt, and Anjali, the video demonstrates why these infrastructure investments are so important for the disability community.

Projects underway thanks to the infrastructure law range from massive retrofits to legacy rail systems, modernizing and retrofitting airport terminals, improving sidewalks, pedestrian signals, and more. Any project funded by the infrastructure bill is required to be compliant with the Americans with Disability Act – making it the largest investment in accessible American infrastructure in our nation’s history. Additionally, the Department has issued a <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=fab1c28b30&e=7ae6290504> final rule and proposed a <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=2eb366f848&e=7ae6290504> new rule for safe and accessible air travel, supported <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=dbb2783f9a&e=7ae6290504> accessibility guidelines, provided updated educational resources for grant applicants, and more.

Examples of key accessibility initiatives include:

*	Funded over $1 billion in projects through the <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=5bc54d91a6&e=7ae6290504> All Stations Accessibility Program at transit and rail stations across the country to ensure all public areas are accessible to people with disabilities.
*	Awarded $5 billion to improve the nation’s airports through the <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=7f5ba3d3e3&e=7ae6290504> Airport Terminal Program. To date, the Department has invested in accessibility improvements for more than 150 airports.
*	Funded new Amtrak trains that will have accessible bathrooms, café cars, wheelchair lifts and more.
*	Established a <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=65679750f6&e=7ae6290504> final rule on accessible lavatories on aircraft, requiring airlines to make lavatories on new single-aisle aircraft large enough to permit a passenger with a disability and an attendant to approach, enter, and maneuver within as necessary to use the aircraft lavatory.
*	Proposed a new rule to <https://whitehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b999ee4d97253671de1a2d1fa&id=65195e24cb&e=7ae6290504> ensure safe and dignified accommodations for air travelers with disabilities using wheelchairs.
