[Nfb-or] jobs Portland

Oh! You are lucky! More and more employers, I hear, are doing that as they
employ blind workers. Makes it easier for the next blind applicant and new
employee. There are a lot more options in braille displays than there were
even six years ago, and some are pretty reasonably priced, depending on what
your need is. I love it! Those two factors alone make the prospect of
re-entering the job market at entry-level or thereabouts downright
attractive. Last time I checked -- although it's been awhile -- the braille
display alone for coding is still dauntingly pricey. Add in the additional
tools required for design and development, and, well... However willing an
employer is to take on a a new hire -- even if it were the Harry Potter of
des/devs -- with that special needs list, the entire acounting department
would be laughing uproariously and cracking jokes over that one for weeks!
/lol/

I still have a ridiculously optimistic plan to use any discretionary income
I can manage to get for myself to save up and gradually build that package
for myself to use for fun and volunteer projects as an avocation, since I am
the sort of person who considers that sort of thing fun in the first place.
But for my real job at this point in my career (bit late, but oh, well),
back to basics sounds pretty good, whether I end up advancing up the ladder
in some direction or not.

Thanks again for the info!

I consider my self lucky.
VZW has inhouse jaws people who make sure jaws works with the VZW software.
No waiting for the state to make fixes and so forth.

Thanks! That's what I've heard from others doing similar work. I still
always ask, because it never hurts to know more. /grin/

Cheers,

I actually use jaws for windows and a Braille display with my current job.

Smart move! Like you say, a true no-brainer.

Since I'm sure Joseph isn't the only one on this list considering call
center work, would you mind talking about what adaptive technology you use
in that work and how you worked with your employer to get it? I'm waiting
to find out what we're going to do about some family stuff back home in the
small town before I look for work myself, and an entry-level
foot-in-the-door position is not off my list. Like Joseph said: It's more
money than I'm making now!

A few years back, when my then-husband was promoted and we relocated, I did
call center work, doing customer satisfaction surveys over the phone, and
found I quite enjoyed it. I was perfectly happy to take the Data Manager
position within a few months, since that's the sort of thing I was actually
doing for a living and what I love, but the call work was surprisingly fun.
Not the same with handling customer service calls, I'm sure, but I feel
friendlier toward that notion now than I ever would have before. /smile/

Anyway, I lost the ability to read even a high res, high-contrast monitor
while waiting for answers, let alone an on-site visit, about working with my
very willing employer about getting the right adaptive tech, so... No more
work for quite awhile. I know a lot more now -- enough to work with a
prospective employer on the nitty gritty without needing to wait for someone
else to get around to showing up. Whew! Still, I am always eager to learn
more. /grin/

Thanks!

You know had the offer been like 14 or 15 an hour I might have thought about
it.
But the loss of almost 5 dollars an hour was a no brainer.
On top of the fact I would have been subject to any bad hours they chose.
I have achieved 8-5 Monday threw Friday where I am. For a call center 8-5
is a great thing.
Not prepared to give that up.

Corey,

Nice of them to make the decision so easy for you, though. /evil grin/

Best wishes where you are!

They want me to work for 11.25 an hour.
Not worth it when I make 16.68 an hour with Verizon Wireless.
