[Nfb-science] Geographic Information Systems and Coding

Hi Science list,

I'd like to know if any of you would have any wisdom to share that would
assist one in the ever popular and useful digital genre called Geographic
Information System. The most popular software tool here is ESRI's ArcMap,
which is what I'm most interested in, if there's no great accessible
alternatives. If the program could be better manipulated via a programming
language or something like SQL, would anyone reading this have
recommendations on accessible options in that regard?
