I thought that the grain, scruple and dram... measures had long gone
out of use.

Well as any fool knows a grain is 1/7000 of a pound. In case more detail is
needed, there are 20 grains in a scruple, 3 scruples in a dram, 8 drams per
ounce, and 12 ounces per pound. That is avoirdupois ounce and pound by the
way, not to be confused with troy ounces, etc.
By the way I must not be a fool, because I didn't know this. I looked it up.
Wonder why scientists use metric system.
