[Nfb-science] Dissecting in an Anatomy Class

Hello,
I think that Rose is correct in that becoming familiar with the anatomy
ahead of time would really be helpful. As a blind student we cannot glance
at a picture while our hands are inside an animal for dissection. Since your
class is dissecting the cat I think it is safe to assume that the anatomy is
similar to that of a human. When I dissected a pig in lab I had to insist
that I got my turn at cutting and probing because my sighted labmates were
afraid that I would cut myself or maybe they were really afraid that I would
mess up the specimen. I appealed to the professor and she also insisted that
I got to do my part. Knowing ahead of time where organs were supposed to be
helped. I got right in their with my hands because I wanted to know
everything that my sighted labmates could see with their eyes. So I think
the best plan is to be as prepared as possible with the information in your
head because we cannot look at a picture while having our hands inside the
animal.
Best wishes for dissecting, Donna Posont

It does! I ordered the Anatomy Atlas last week! It should be arriving soon.
Thank you! :)

We sell a few products that might help you with human anatomy; it's called
the Basic Tactile Anatomy Atlas. It consists of two binders full of tactile
graphics for each anatomical/physiological system. I regret that I do not
know of an equivalent for cat anatomy, but since they are both mammals, many
of the graphics will apply to both. Here is a link to the APH shop site for
this product:

Anatomy this term. As part of this course, we have to dissect a cat. I am
wondering if anyone on the list has experience with performing dissections
as a blind person? Were you able to perform the dissections? What
tools/accommidations did you use? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
