Beginning with a National Leadership Summit
on June 5, 2023

Although people with disabilities comprise the largest minority group in the United States, stigma and ableism continue to limit opportunities for disabled people to fully contribute to and be successful in the STEM ecosystem.

Please join us for a transformational set of conversations on Disrupting Ableism and Advancing STEM<https://nationalacademies.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5dc4a6f3f17fd11adf3be4912&id=bf0fb7e5ac&e=2bfeeef996>. The series of events will run from June 5-16, 2023. We will explore issues related to the accessibility and inclusivity of STEM workplaces for persons with disabilities.

All events will include an ASL interpreter and CART interpretation. Any slides or electronic documents that are provided will be shared online. The series will begin with a National Leadership Summit on June 5, 2023.
Panels and presentations will explore issues related to the accessibility and inclusivity of STEM workplaces for persons with disabilities. With asset-based and intersectional approaches to understanding the experiences of persons with disabilities across STEM workplaces, the agenda will include discussions of disability identity, workplace ecosystems, systemic institutional barriers limiting career advancement, and access and inclusion practices and policies that support and advance persons with disabilities in the STEM.

This virtual session of Disrupting Ableism and Advancing STEM will focus on examining workplaces by considering the perspectives of employees and employers in various STEM fields. We will explore access and inclusion practices and policies that can contribute to supporting and advancing persons with disabilities at work.

Fostering Effective Mentorship in the STEM Ecosystem on June 13th: PDF Agenda<https://nationalacademies.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5dc4a6f3f17fd11adf3be4912&id=10767d0ee9&e=2bfeeef996>

This session will focus on the important role of mentorship in supporting students and workers with disabilities in the STEM ecosystem.  We will learn from the science of mentorship about principles of mentorship and proven approaches. We will also discuss the importance of belonging, learn about the benefits of mutual mentorship among peers, and hear from multiple mentor/mentee pairs about their own experiences and their recommendations for others.

Cultivating Accessible Educational Pathways and Spaces on June 15th: PDF Agenda<https://nationalacademies.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5dc4a6f3f17fd11adf3be4912&id=dc7183dbda&e=2bfeeef996>

This session will focus on the important role of education in preparing students with disabilities as they enter the STEM ecosystem. Discussions will focus on the need to challenge assumptions about who can learn and succeed in STEM and the need to make direct changes to policies and practices to facilitate positive educational experiences for students. Examples will include asset based approaches to learning in classrooms, laboratories, online, and in the field.

Rooting out Bias and Barriers on June 16th: PDF Agenda<https://nationalacademies.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5dc4a6f3f17fd11adf3be4912&id=880030ffdd&e=2bfeeef996>

This session will focus on the need to decrease bias and know down barriers to facilitate full participation of people with disabilities in the STEM workforce. Discussions will focus on the need to critically examine environments (both physical and otherwise) to find the structures and policies and attitudes that limit participation. Tools for examining barriers will be presented and strategies for overcoming barriers will also be shared. In addition, this wrap up session for the series will conclude with remarks from the planning committee members on what they have learned from the process, the sessions, and the participants that can inform future work to better include people with disabilities in the STEM workforce.
