Hi everyone,

This is a great idea John.

I am a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of North Carolina. I am a bioinformatics scientist, which means I use statistical data analysis and computer programming to study genomics. I would be happy to help anyone with questions about genomics, genetics, bioinformatics, data analysis, programming, and general biology. My programming expertise is in R, python, and unix/bash shell scripting. I also have experience with data sonification, which represents data using sound.

My research focuses on how human genetic variation and environmental factors increase disease risk. I use large-scale datasets consisting of gene expression, epigenetic markers, and genetic variation across hundreds to thousands of individuals to identify statistical associations and predict genes that others in the lab test for causal effects with experimental methods.

I have recently had success in using AI to substantially increase the speed at which I can make visually appealing presentations and concept diagrams for sighted colleagues. Previously it was very time consuming and challenging for me to make visually appealing presentations and I would have to work a lot with sighted colleagues to fine tune layouts. Now Gemini can take care of much of that heavy lifting and I can focus more on the content of the presentation or diagram. I was even able to make a diagram to explain a concept 5 minutes before a meeting.
