Subject: Announcement for May SAGE meeting
National Federation of the Blind of New Mexico
<mailto:NFBNM.sage at gmail.com> NFBNM.sage at gmail.com
Every month we get together to learn about blindness. We get together to
learn how others do the things they do after they lose their vision,
something they have relied on for some or all of their lives. Come join us
on Wednesday, May 14, at 7:00 P. m MSDT. Robert L. Newman will be here to
share his life. Here's his short bio.
Robert is a 76 year old former sighted guy who was blinded at age 15 as a
result of a one car accident (no he was not driving). Functioning as a blind
person has come easily to him, despite starting with very few encounters
with blind people (be it face-to-face and/or seen on television). Robert's
first instructional and exposure to blindness and actual blind people came
about from becoming a student at the Nebraska's residential school for the
visually handicapped; where he learned basic blindness skills, plus the
pecking-order in the student body, and rules set by the administration, all
based upon vision. Later, he became a client of the Nebraska Rehabilitation
Services for the Visually Impaired; Where he eventually became an employee
(37 years). However. his true resurrection of self, confidence and
independence did not come until he met and became a part of the National
Federation of the blind (a respected leader both in affiliate and national
Divisions). He is now one of the many who happen to be blind, and lived the
lives' they want and are willing to share the truth of blindness- Answering
- one of the world's best kept secrets. you can live the life you want,
blindness is not what holds you back!
In closing- After sharing all the above, how does Robert square up this
final statement/truth of, "I hate being blind!"

The National Federation of the Blind is a community of members and friends
who believe in the hopes and dreams of the nation's blind. Every day we work
together to help blind people live the lives they want.

NFB Pledge:
I pledge to participate actively in the efforts of the National Federation
of the Blind to achieve equality, opportunity, and security for the blind;
to support the policies and programs of the Federation; and to abide by its
constitution.
NFB Belief statement
the Blind advances the lives of its members and all blind people in the
United States. We know that blindness is not the characteristic that defines
you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people,
because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our
dreams. Our collective power, determination, and diversity achieve the
aspirations of all blind people.
