Dar, excuse me but if you bite on that you may find yourself "helping out" a
scammer.
It is an old one -- someone calls and says you have won a prize, but can't
tell you when you entered this sweepstakes -- they keep you on the phone
talking to various people to get you trusting them, then very carefully they
tell you that in order to claim this prize you need to cover the cost of the
insurance, which is provided by Lloyds of London at a cost of 1% of the
prize -- so for $25000 that would be $250. Usually it's more than that.
You pay them the money by giving them your bank account number and you never
hear from them again, but you soon find your identity has been stolen. It
has happened to a friend of mine. They lost thousands of dollars. I got
one of those calls last January. I knew it was a scam as it smelled like one
from the first, but I kept him on the line just to try and smoke him out. He
had me take a code number and call someone else who said yes, it was for
real, I had won--then the first guy called me back. They pestered me from
many different phone numbers from various places in the country--but on the
caller ID my mother said the calls were coming from someone called
"Albitross Marketing". That was too funny. Next time he called me I asked
him what Albitross Marketting was. He was surprised about the caller id.
Then he gave me his office number, which had a 202 area code. I called it
and he answered. But it is easy using skype or other phone software to get
phone numbers that appear to be from different locations. It is hard to
trace these guys.
In the end he came to the Lloyds of London business, wanting $2000. I cried
scam and he continued calling saying threatening things like "You don't
understand what happening -- we have your address, you know that..."
I haven't heard from them for a while.
But this is why I want a talking caller id with a tts that will read the
names without me recording them.
I can't find one anywhere. Does anyone know of one?
Sorry about the long message. Just warning about the scamorama surrounding
sweepstakes.
Take care.

Smile,
I got a call yesterday saying that I was on the winners list for
$25,000 so if I truly could help someone first helping myself, then I
would help others.
I have to see it happen first.
smile.
