[nfb-talk] Media Influence

Michael,

I agree that publicity from the Driver Challenge would be great, but let's
admit that it's also glamour. I fear too much attention would be devoted to
the technology and not the blind people behind the wheel. I was thinking of
something more day-to-day, something to show everyday people performing
everyday tasks. Granted, it would need to have a hook. I would love to
learn more about how blind people are doing photography, woodwork,
construction and a myriad of other tasks outside of the traditional office.
As a fundraising professional I enjoy what I do and feel I am good at it,
but since most of it is brain work and manipulating the computer to churn
out my ideas, I feel my profession is a little dull compared to other guys
who are carrying out tasks which I feel are more challenging. In other
words, I think even I would find such a show inspiring. Maybe even just
recommending a good blind person example for a brief segment on one of the
popular talk shows would be good. I just feel that despite a limited
budget, the NFB budget is not so limited as to do a little more to reverse
misconceptions in the mainstream media, where it truly counts.

Isn't that what will happen with the Driver Challenge at
Daytona in January?
The more we publicize that the better it shall be. Does anyone have
influence with the Racing channel or might someone contact
whatever station
will broadcast the race to help influence them to show a blind person
driving a car?

I guess I just don't understand why we can't counter these
shows with some
publicity of our own. If we feel so strongly about the
negative perceptions
advanced by these type of broadcasts, why don't we try to get
the Discovery
Channel or some such educational venue to portray blindness the
way we would
want it portrayed? Or, why don't we just do it ourselves? We
can't very
well complain about the influence of the media if we aren't willing to
invest in trying to influence it.
