[nfb-talk] Tragedy in Denver

All,

The NFB is not going to fix everything we encounter. I think the
reaction here was to the idea that we should make bus stops safer. Safer
for whom? Blind people? Why if not also for sighted persons? Safer for
all? I suspect that the present bus stop arrangements were thought out by
engineers, city personnel and even consumers. True, blind people were
probably not a major consideration, but stops should be made safer for all
if they are unsafe.

I suspect that there are ways to make bus stops more safe, but also the
vehicles are a big part of the problem. Here is a thought. The NFB is
working to make a car available which blind persons can drive. Certainly
part of that car will include collision avoidance technology which may have
even kept the vehicle further away from the curb in the first. Said
technology may not have permitted the car to be going as fast as it was.

The bottom line is, who knows what will be come down the road as it were?
The automobile industry is working to make safer vehicles and traffic
engineers are working to make roads and sidewalks including bus stops safer
for all. I appreciate all the sentiments expressed here, but in the final
analysis what happened was not a blindness issue. We really need to take
this discussion to a wider arena and not our lists since in one way or
another we are preaching to the quire. Someone mentioned earlier this
morning that bloggers were making this a blindness issue. What blogs?
Anyone got addresses? Please share specifics and then let's all go visit
the blogs and tell the real story about what it means to be blind.

Merry Christmas,

Now now, we are not regecting you personally, just the idea of making bus
stops safer. Yes, it's true that saying "sorry" won't bring Dave back; but,
neither will fixing every bus stop in the country for maximum safety. The
only way you can do that is just stay home and not go anywhere. That's the
only point we're all trying to make.

Besides, like Dave Andrews said a few days ago, the policy of the NFB is not
determined on this or any other lists; rather, it's determined at our
national conventions. No need to take it so personally.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!
