LITTLETON - A 21-year-old woman has been cited for a crash that killed a
blind man and injured two blind women at a bus stop.

Littleton Police say Nina B. Mastroianna of Englewood was cited with
careless driving resulting in death and two counts of careless driving
resulting in injury after her car fishtailed on ice at the intersection of
Utica and Mineral, and hit a group of students from the Colorado Center for
the Blind on Dec. 17. The students were waiting for a bus to take them to
their holiday party.

According to police, 47-year-old David Alan Nanney was killed in the crash.
Eighteen-year-old Helen G. Sydnor and 26-year-old Carissa Ubersox were
injured in the crash, but have since been released from a hospital and are
recovering at home.

Mastroianna was not injured in the crash. Police say she told them she
frequently saw the blind students sitting at the corner and was devastated
by the crash, calling it unthinkable.

Lt. Sean P. Dugan says the accident was not a case of distracted driving.

"We don't even think she had her cell phone with her," Dugan said.

Police say Mastroianna will appear in Arapahoe County Court on the Class 1
misdemeanor traffic offenses.

Brian, if this woman is indeed charge with something, I imagine her defense
lawyers would try to pull what was done to you. It would play into
society's misconceptions of us. It would be up to the other side to prove
otherwise, and if the woman did indeed disobey the stop sign, that goes a
long way toward proving that blindness had nothing to do with it.
