I think the most important thing is to have lights on when appropriate. 
Whether you're blind or sighted, it's good to turn lights on at night, so it 
appears that someone is at home.  It's less likely that someone will try to 
break in if lights are on.  We also have to remember to turn lights on when 
we have sighted guests.  But, we also have to ask our sighted guests to be 
sure lights are turned off when they leave.  We've had more than one 
occasion when we've found a light left on for days.
