They would have died by this time anyway. Batteries (especially ni-cads) usually only last a couple years.

My battery is toast. I have to keep the unit plugged in if I want to use it. This is my second battery.

The building where Paul and I lived in was a very old building and bad wiring. I think that is what killed both batteries.

I'm surprised your Type 'N Speak battery still has legs.

Hi David,

Thank you!

I received my Type'n Speak in 2000 when I was getting my GED and I still use mine also.

Great note takers!

Dear Tom,

I have a Type-N-Speak that I got back in 1993 and Gloria's description is very accurate.
I can do word processing, with spell check, and even has it own Braille Translator built in.
I still use mind for note taking and like it better than my Braille Note M-power.
I find the Braille Note keyboard a little tight for my hands and the stretches are different than for my computer keyboard.
The Pac-Mate was offered as a replacement for it back in the late 90's and the Pac-Mate can do much more and is about the same size and layout.
The device was just passed by by the advances in technology, but was very handy and good at what it did when it came out in the early 90's.
I still use mine all of the time as it boots up in seconds, has a 23 hour battery life and lets me make or open a file very quickly and unless in the insert mode, appends anything I type to the end of the open file automatically.
I can never type over something I have written by mistake.
I have upgraded mine twice and replaced the battery twice since 1993 when I got it.. I will run it till it drops.
Freedom Scientific still has some rebuilt ones and will still repair them, but support is no longer available.
