Dear NFB-Talkers,

Lorraine Rovig has forwarded this email to you with the following message:
Dr. Cary Supalo's company publishes an interesting e-
zine with articles on blind students studying science,
technology, engineering, and math (STEM subjects)
and on the tools for accessibility in these fields. Cary
developed a number of them in order to get his degree.

Back to school edition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Lorraine,
It's that time of year again and we know you are busy with all the hustle bustle
 of getting ready to teach and learn new exciting concepts in class. We have been
busy too, developing the next generation of scientific access technology.
For example, Dr. Cary Supalo presented at the Boston AER Regional Conference [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zlmm7vfab&t=apkacohab.0.dgp65qhab.zlmm7vfab.0&ts=S0671&p=http%3A%2F%2Findependencescience.com%2Fblog%2F%3Fp%3D117],
we released a new product catalog, we are working with future Summer Camps to help
students build a career in the STEM fields of study, and we are getting ready for
Dr. Supalo's visit to locations throughout Missouri later this month to show the
 latest version of our scientific data collection technology. If you or your school
are interested in a demonstration please email Michelle Michaels [mailto:mmichaels at independencescience.com]
for the calendar of events or to set up a teacher workshop.
One of the most exciting events we have to announce is the approach of IsLAND, our
Second Annual Conference on Disability! With pre-registration, IsLAND [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zlmm7vfab&t=apkacohab.0.egp65qhab.zlmm7vfab.0&ts=S0671&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.independencescience.com%2Fisland.php]
is free to attend and all persons are invited to join us in providing all students
with equal access to educational opportunities. This conference serves as a way
to educate and connect those in the classroom to the latest assistive technology,
while exploring alternative teaching methods and low tech solutions.
We hope you will be able to join us on Oct. 28 and 29th as we present ways to help
increase the opportunities for those with disabilities to participate in the STEM
fields of study!
Thank you to our Gold Sponsor, gh [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zlmm7vfab&t=apkacohab.0.fgp65qhab.zlmm7vfab.0&ts=S0671&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gh-accessibility.com],
for their braille embossing and other assistance in making this conference possible.
Please visit our site [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zlmm7vfab&t=apkacohab.0.usk6ubgab.zlmm7vfab.0&ts=S0671&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.independencescience.com]
for pre-registration or to learn more about your fully accessible science solution,
then contact Michelle Michaels [mailto:mmichaels at independencescience.com] to purchase
or inquire about the most advanced access technology for data collection.
Hope to see you at IsLAND!
Sincerely,
The Independence Science Team
IsLAND Conference on Disability
The 2011 Independence Science Learning a New Direction Conference (IsLAND) will
be held at Purdue University at the Purdue Memorial Union East and West Faculty
Lounges on the West Lafayette, Indiana campus. This event will occur on Friday,
October 28, and Saturday, October 29, 2011.
Persons with disabilities (PWD) are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology,
engineering, and math (STEM). The purpose of the ISLAND conference is learn about
factors that contribute to STEM underrepresentation and technologies and strategies
for increasing STEM representation.
This event is open and free to all registered persons. Pre-registration is strongly
encouraged for planning purposes. Technology vendors will be available to show their
products and services. If you are interested showing your products or services,
please follow our registration link and register as a vendor.
For more information about the 2011 ISLAND Conference on Disability: Register or
 learn more about IsLAND! [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?llr=zlmm7vfab&t=apkacohab.0.egp65qhab.zlmm7vfab.0&ts=S0671&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.independencescience.com%2Fisland.php]
AER Regional Conference 2011
Dr. Cary Supalo and members of Independence Science attended and presented the findings
of the ILAB project at the regional conference of the Association for Education
and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired last month.
Hosted at the historic Boston Park Plaza, this conference helps to develop communication
between teachers of the visually impaired, access technology exhibitors, and persons
who are blind.
Modern techniques and teaching methods were a consistent theme in the conference
 as well as the latest access technology.
Product Catalog 2011
Featured in the catalog: the top-selling Vernier LabQuest data collection device,
and the LoggerPro software; the same lab equipment used in middle schools, high
schools, and some colleges across the US- and the World!
Also included are lab manuals to use with the interfaces to help you design the
experiments that will challenge and open the minds of your students. The line of
 Go! Products offer a simple and easy interface for younger students in elementary
school to independently collect data.
For the busy teacher, science access packages have been developed to make it easier
for you to fulfill the requirements of your science curricula.
Blind Teens use Senses of Smell and Touch to Learn about Chemistry
Nothing drives home the concepts of chemistry quite like learning in the laboratory.
But blind students, who can't see color changes or safely handle caustic chemicals,
often find themselves stuck on the sidelines when it comes to high school chemistry
classes.
It doesn't have to be that way, says Henry (Hoby) Wedler, a chemistry graduate student
at the University of California, Davis, who has been blind since birth. "No one
can see atoms," he explains. "Chemistry is in your head. You think about it."
Seeking to provide mentorship to blind teens with an interest in science, Wedler
 set up a chemistry camp to give these students a taste-or more accurately, a whiff...read
