[nfb-talk] Need Compitent Blind Traveler in Raleigh, N.C.

Thanks. I'm thrilled to see a blind person professionally involved in
transit. At one time, I was focusing my advocacy time on transit, but since
I'm a psychotherapist who also does career counseling now, I've tended to
focus on employment issues. Thanks for being there.

Karen

Dear Karen,

Blindness, by itself is not a reason that will get anyone on to
Para-transit. service.
The inability to access and use the fixed route bus is what makes a person
eligible to use Para-transit.
Some blind people must use Para-transit because of other reasons and
factors. Such things as arthritis, diabetes, heart conditions, medications
that they take that effect their ability to walk, stand, think clearly and
navigate the system are just some of the reasons.
In many places, the local services may have an automatic qualifier based on
age, such as anyone over 85 or the like.
It can vary from location to location around the Country.
Transit systems are encouraged to exceed the ADA, when they can, but they
can not do less that it requires.
I have been involved in transit since 1986 and work for a company that
provides services for my area of Palm Beach County Florida. We have won the

"Best Urban Transit System in America twice in the past 8 years as awarded
by the (CTAA) Community Transit Association of America.

If I can help, please write me back .
