I am so use to using Jaws. Jaws was the first screen-reading program I have ever used.

jaws and window eyes are the leading screen readers and they seem to have
the most functionality with windows software. Jaws is built to read and
interpret websites well and has custom features such as creating book marks
online. Yes, expensive, but you get what you pay for. That said, the best
screen reader will depend on your needs. Some use System access which costs
like 300 I think and say it meets their needs. Others use the free screen
reader NVDA and it meets their needs.
So it just depends. Sorry to hear its out of your budget as I think many
blind users think it’s a great screen reader. I personally like the ability
now to use research it, the speech schemes mode, and get a list of errors
in a document such as a list of objects, spelling errors, or grammar
mistakes. Of course other screen readers may do some of these, but from what
I've heard jaws does much more than most of them.

I have a question on what is the best screen-reader to use.

I sure cannot afford jaws any more.

I am getting less than $800.00 a month now that my husband has passed away.

If you all could give me suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
