nfb-talk Digest, Vol 55, Issue 62

Steve is quite correct. I myself to in fact dispute what Todor says below:
however, frankly, that is quite beside the point. On this list, and in the
NFB membership in general, there are blind conservatives like me: whether
the left likes it or not. There are also blind liberals: whether the right
likes it or not. There are also those either in between or don't care about
such things one way or the other: whether either extreme likes it or not.
We are blind people: and therefore, we have the right to believe what we
will about this or that issue. At the same time, we all of us have an
obligation to be willing and able to put these things aside if we're going
to deal with the serious issues which I believe will confront us fairly soon
now. The really sad part, so far as I am concerned, is that, till now, it
seems like we have not been willing even to acknowledge that we're going to
have to face some of these questions. We can't keep this up forever.
Eventually, everybody else's money will be gone and then what do we do.
Back in the 40's, the founders of the NFB decided to try to set it up so
that blind people could receive SSI just based on blindness. Back in those
days, the situation was so bad for blind people that there was a necessity
to do this. Nowadays, however, I wonder quite frankly whether we hadn't
better plan for what to do in the event this is no longer possible. The
plain fact is this. We've gotten so used to the SSI check that it's almost
like a kind of guarantee. But, ask yourself what would happen if it became
necessary to effect another solution and we found ourselves unprepared to
handle even the fact of the question; let alone an answer.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray
