Kerri!
Well, you got company. I had these questions and concerns every time I
looked for a part time job or internship.
I'm glad you took initiative to seek out a job and are thinking ahead about
your accomodations. That shows maturity and planning on your part. Too many
blind people simply look to rehab for these sorts of questions or
opportunities. I just talked to a young guy out of college a few years who
is simply waiting for rehab to get him a job. Yet he is not seeking even a
volunteer job in the meantime for himself. I am finished school and with the
economy, I know what you mean about sitting around.
Now, to your questions. Just apply and try and get an interview. In
interviews, they ask you if you
have questions for them. Ask a handful such as what computer system they use
and what databases.
Then you can research its accessibility. You can say you use jaws and
explain its use.
I believe customer service jobs are harder for us to do now, but you should
certainly try. Its harder due to the multi layered databases and more
graphically nature of them.
You cannot see a split screen like sighted people can; this means when you
have one window open on the right side and one on the left.
I have not heard of the company or blind people working there. But blind
people certainly work customer service. I know the airlines have them and so
do hotels like Marriott. You might try a mentoring source. I suggested this
on the nabs list too.
It’s the AFB career connect. You have to create an account with career
connect. Once you do, you can search for a mentor. In your case, type in
customer service representative or contact representative or something like
it.
Its at www.afb.org.
Good luckk.

Subject: [nfb-talk] Job Questions...
Hi Everyone:
It looks like I won't be going back to school until January, so in the
meantime I am considering getting a job or even part-time job to keep
me busy.
There is a company here called Teletech. They are a worldwide customer
service based company where it's sort of like a call center. They have
locations all over the country including places such as Austin, Texas,
and Englewood, Colorado among many others. You answer calls from
customers about their Bank of America accounts. Teletech is always
looking for customer service representatives, but right now they are
currently looking for as many as 25 people to work as customer service
representatives! That is a lot of people they are wanting to hire!!
I am considering applying and trying to get a job there.
However, the problems I can see with this job are tthe accomodations.
First of all, has anyone ever heard of Teletech? Do you know anything about
it?
Do you know of any blind people who currently work there, or if not
currently, do you know of any blind people who have worked there in
the past?
Does anyone on these lists or that I am sending this to know with
technology being the way it is if it is even still possible for a
blind person to work in customer service?
Does anyone know if the software Teletech uses is accessible with a
screenreader?
Should I still apply and go in and talk to them anyway or should I
just forget it because of the accomodations that will have to be made?
As I said previously, 25 people is a lot of people they are looking to
hire, and I'm tired of sitting around!
Thanks so much!
Kerri
