[nfb-talk] Stupidity running amuck on the Colbert Report!

The other thing to keep in mind is that while we believe in independent
travel wherever possible, there are times when it may be perfectly
appropriate to use sighted guide. This speech has been referred to many
times, because it was a masterpiece, but I refer you to "The Nature of
Independence," delivered by Dr. Jernigan at the 1993 national convention.
In this speech he talks about not only having your travel skills, but having
the ability to choose methods based on certain situations. One of the
examples he reflects on in that speech is whether in a crowded restaurant it
is really more independent to follow a sighted friend who has to keep
verbally directing you or is it really more independent to just take that
person's arm, perhaps making it easier for both of you. But because you
have the skills, you have choices you can make, and that is also part of
what independence is all about.

Preferably a cane? According to whose preference and why should it matter
to you whether someone uses a dog or a cane to get around independently?
Isn't it enough that said hypothetical person travels about?

Correct!
I'm proud of Mr. Carter's responses about it, but I want to know, as I
posted before, why doesn't he use a cane or a dog?
All of the blind boys are putting their hands on the shoulders of the
sighted guys in the band, so they can be led on stage!
#1, that's empropper sighted guide, and #2, they need to use a cane, or a
dog, but preferably a cane, to get around!
Blessings, Joshua

All I will say is that racism should be considered ridiculous and stupid
regardless of whether one is blind or dighted.

Two nights ago, my friends, the Blind Boys of Alabama were guests on Stephen
Colbert's show on Commedy Central.
Colbert had the nerve to ask Jimmy Carter, (the leader of the group,) a
stupid question.
"As a blind person, does racism seem ridiculous to you, since you can't tell
what race somebody is?"
What's next?
Not only is the question offensive from a racial standpoint, but it's
offensive from the blindness perspective!
I would have asked to have my group removed from the show, but Jimmy
educated Mr. Colbert, and handled it with grace!
There's a link to this ignorance on the group's Twitter page.
