[nfb-talk] Having Sleepovers with sighted friends

My friends called my parents by their first names or even mom and dad. Even
when I was an adult and didn't live at home, I could bring friends over to
stay with me, even boyfriends. My dad didn't care, once I was an adult. I
must have had slumber parties for almost all my birthday from the time I was
in junior high, or maybe before.

Yep, my parents encouraged it too. And my house became one of those where
the friends of ours liked to gather. The fun house, so to speak.

Oh yes, I remember the sleep-overs and when older, slumber parties, both at
my house, and at others' houses, what mad wonderful fun, and great memories.
Even in college, I was known to bring friends home with me for fun weekends,
and my parents encouraged it.

I had lots of sleepovers with sighted friends. And had lots of friends sleep
over at my house. It was great and one of my better memories of childhood. I
was excessively shy, and being around just a few friends, or just one friend
overnight helped me get to know them better and gain confidence. And it was
fun! That was the sixties and seventies. I don't know if things were less
frightening for parents, or if my stepmom talked to my friends' parents
first.

Of course they should. As a parent myself, I can tell you that this is
absolutely, period amen not a blindness issue. Good for your parents for not
allowing a sleepover with people that she presumably had never met. Of
course, a hundred years after, we don't know the circumstances surrounding
this. Was there enough time that she could have talked to or met with this
other family?

I was in sixth grade. One of my sighted friends invited me to a sleepover
at her house. When I went home that evening, I asked my mom if I could go
to the sleepover and she said no. I was so sad because I could not go to my
friend's house. My parents did not allow me to go because thex did not know
my sighted friend or her parents. Should blind kids be allowed to attend
sleepovers with their sighted friends? Hope to hear from you soon.
