[nfb-talk] Fwd: {Single Payer} Disabled protesters dragged from McConnell's office! So where our blind organizations?

Wow, I really wonder where you read that I didn't think we had anything to worry about. I think we do. I also said that I thought it was a good thing that people called attention to this bill. And yes, believe it or not, I was writing about the senate bill, and part of my point was that some modifications are likely to have to take place to get that hand full of Republicans to vote for it. Once that happens, if it happens, we could find that we have different things to fear in the bill. That was the "evolving" to which I was referring. I merely pointed out that I could see that it might not hurt to not have sent bus loads of people to a protest so early. I also maintain that this is a marathon. Regardless of whatever passes or doesn't pass, I don't plan on just giving up after the upcoming action as you apparently are. Whether the Affordable Health Care Act was perfect or not, it was moving things in the right direction. Even if the cuts to Medicade are reversed completely, I have other issues with the current direction and think there are going to need to be other on-going campaigns necessary to be sure people are covered fairly and adequately. This means supporting what we decide to do as an organization and supporting other organizations who are aligned around health care issues. I have and will continue to donate to campaigns of political candidates who reflect what I think should happen with health care, something nonprofits cannot do. I am not as convinced as you apparently are that getting arrested was necessarily the most effective way to make the point, and I am saying that as one who was arrested to make a point in my past. Whether it was the best course of action or not, it does not justify the treatment that I understand was given to those who were arrested.

So can I assume that you were there and that you contacted your senators already, especially if they are Republicans?

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Holy cow, Steve, there is a bill in the Senate right now, sponsored by
the Republican majority leaderand put together by Republicans for
Republicans that would strip a trillion dollars from Medicaid. The only
thing standing between it and passin is a handful of Republican
Senators, and to you there's nothing to worry about? The only thing that
is going to keep that bill from passing is, in fact, action on the part
of organizations like the NFB.

I don't know where you get your news from but everything I've seen says
it's touch and go. There's no "watching health care legislation evolve",
no "marathon". It's now or never.

As an organization, though, I would think it would make sense to get a better sense of where this is going before we pull out all stops as some have already done. As it stands right now, there is a pretty good chance the current bill isn't going anywhere as it is written because of a number of Republicans who are not supporting it. Having people willing to call attention to this issue is a good thing, but I also don't see a problem in an organization waiting to see if we're going to need further action later. This is probably going to be a marathon and not a fifty yard dash. Another aspect of all this is that it is easy to put all ones energy into a single issue and a single event without concerned about any other legislative activities that might be affected by one's action. It is much more difficult to measure one's response to maximize one's general effectiveness and to make sure there is energy left when it is most needed. I hope that our leadership would consider how are actions might affect the other issues that we're trying to address. Finally, I don't see a problem with us conserving some of our energy to fight for things that nobody else is fighting for. I think one can make a decision not to pull out all stops to deal with an issue knowing that there are others who will do it while still feeling the issue is important. .

That whole story is on that same Rachel Madow podcast. They snarled traffic in Denver for a day and a half to protest the fact that they couldn't use city buses. It made me think of all the debates I have had on this list with people who feard a "backlash" from pushing for our rights.
