[nfb-talk] Caveat, do not buy yet. FW: HIMS Introduces the All-New QBraille XL

The biggest selling point is braille access, that allows the blind to truly "read." True text reading, whether you do it with your eyes or fingers, is a vital skill. If I were to go that route, I would purchase an Android pad with a small display. A fraction of the cost of a stand-alone notetaker.

However, in the notetaker's defence, you are only carrying around 1 device instead of two. The reason I have held off with purchasing a tablet is that I like smaller devices, so why not just use the phone. I am always using my Galaxy S8 with either the GBoard keyboard or bluetoothing into my U2 or Polaris using BrailleBack.

However, now with the Polaris, I can access many of those Android apps I have on the phone, so have yet another option, yay!

Thanks.

Judy

To be sure. One could argue, and many have, that an iPad or iPhone is much more versatile and powerful than any specialized notetaker. There are still a lot of folks who are much more comfortable in the notetaker environment, with actual honest to poshness keys, but I believe it’s really just a matter of time.

I believe that in the long-term, notetakers as we have known them will become a thing of the past, as phones become more versatile, and computers become smaller i.e. possibly morphing into tablets. We already see tablets with optional keyboards that can attach. The down-side being they do not have a terabyte of storage.

I mean…the Braille Edge could be considered a notetaker, as it does have basic notetaker functions…about like a Braille ’n Speak or such. That’s a far cry from what’s considered a “notetaker” these days, which is more akin to a purpose built computer. I’ve heard things like the Edge referred to as “notetakerettes”, which isn’t a real word but should be picked up by someone as a spiffy new marketing buzzword. Heck…even the Orbit Reader 20 could be considered a *very* basic notetaker…but if the Edge is a “notetakerette”, the Orbit would be…what? But I digress somewhat.

I hope I am wrong. I'm looking at the pattern of introducing a shiny toy that may or may not be ready for the market yet, but driven by competition to produce.

>> When you’re comparing the Polaris, or for that matter the Braille Sense/Braille Sense U2/Mini, to this new display, it’s not an apples to apples comparison. A more accurate comparison would be comparing to the previous Hims display, which would be the Braille Edge. One of similar features would be the Baum Vario Ultra. None of these are notetakers in the same sense as the Polaris, Braille Sense/Mini/U2, or the BrailleNote Apex or Touch is. This new device, priced similarly to the Braille Edge, appears to be the next iteration of the Braille edge with additional features/keyboard/etc.
>>
>> With the Polaris, Hims has had to contend with a whole scale architecture change, from Windows CE to Android. This was a change that, I suspect, wasn’t completely voluntary in nature, as Microsoft’s focus shifts. Regardless, such a sweeping change, it seems to me, would make some bugs inevitable, especially if they feel that they have to meet an aggressive release schedule. I’m not justifying, as I think it’s better to get it right than it is to get it fast, but I do think it’s important to have an idea of what’s being compared and what the challenges are.
