Remember please that what we always have tried to emphasize is that programs
like dining in the dark do not work because sighted people do not have the
training and thus not the skills to work with blindness techniques.
Reversing the roles won't work until sighted people have the proper training
and develop the expertise and philosophy to understand blindness.
Best Regards,
Michael Hingson

I agree with what you said. I just don't think it would work. Pam.

Generally, asking sighted people who have no experience with blindness to
"pretend" or "play a role" of being blind does not work. A sighted person
just becomes more frightened, and feels a greater sense of pity when they
are put in that situation. We who have been either blind all of our lives,
or have learned over time to adapt do not feel those same feelings of fear
and pity for ourselves, or at least, we shouldn't.
The best way to deal with frustrating family, is to stand strong, and
remember that it is ok to disagree with them. They are not always right, but
their hearts are usually in the right place. Sometimes we know our abilities
when our own families do not. It is ok to let them know that they are wrong,
and it is ok to prove the wrong. Sometimes this causes a rif between the
blind person and their family, but in most cases, it does not.
Of course, this is one person's opinion and should be treated as such.

it's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure how it could really be done, and
what the people would get out of it. Pam.

Dear Members,
Two weeks ago I was reading the Fall 2019 issue of Future Reflections. I
came across Treva Olivero's article that discussed reversing the roles of
teacher and student for a day. As I was reading this piece, I thought about
what is would be like to reverse the roles of blind and sighted family
members. Maybe it would deepen their understanding of blindness and what we
as blind people go through on a daily basis. Would it make them more
patient? I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.
Roanna Bacchus
