[Nfb-web] Site Navigation

Hi Pete and Everyone,

I don't think we were saying the NFB website is inaccessible or difficult, but the design is almost 10 years old and way out of date.

My comments were not intended in any way to be overly critical or negative, but were meant to be constructive criticism. I understand that some in the Federation are overly critical of NFB headquarters and I can assure you that I am not one of them.

It was suggested that a plan needs to be developed, so I am doing just that and working with a couple other Federationists on developing a plan to move forward in a way that would benefit the entire organization.

Perhaps some of the problem is folks not using their screen reader's keyboard shortcuts and navigation features. I use the JFW "Links List" function quite often and it gets me to where I need to go on a Website quickly. If I want to read the Braille Monitor once on the homepage I activate this feature with the Jaws Key+F7, hit the letter "P" to land on the "Publications Link, and hit "Enter" to activate the link. I repeat the same process once on the "Publications Page this time using the Letter "B" as in Braille Monitor and hit enter. Voilla! I'm on the access page for The Braille Monitor. It's just a matter of finding the issue I wish to read and hitting "Enter" to go to that issue's homepage. H and shift+H do wonders for moving up and down Web pages by header and the NfB's Website contains lots of headers. Seemingly awful Websites some feel are impossible to navigate are quite navigable with a screen reader if one invests in learning all of the screen reader's navigation commands. All the best for a great Fourth of July.

For users who are just exploring, I don't think they realize how many times they've clicked to get to where they got. Please don't misconstrue this to mean navigation shouldn't be as streamlined as possible. Perhaps folks have one ideas about how the main site's navigation could be improved.

You have to click about 15 times in order to read one braille monitor issue. It's really awful but to keep on topic. Here's another idea. Fix your own website before you try and fix other websites and me. And I am really staying on topic. Because excess ability is fine. But usability is another thing. The NFB main website is not a musical. It's a horrible user experience

There seem to be more and more cases where certain combinations of screen readers and web browsers work differently, and where possible, we need to hold screen reader developers accountable when appropriate.
