Philosophy Friday: Audible Pedestrian Signals

Accessible pedestrian signals are designed to provide nonvisual indications
about when the walk signal at an intersection is on. This topic is one that
is often fraught with considerable discussion and varied opinions. Over the
years, a variety of designs have been implemented: from buzzers, clicks,
beeps, and now to recorded human speech. Curtis Chong, Scott LaBarre, and
Dan Burke will discuss the technological, political, and legal issues
related to this technology and the reasons why these devices are not
installed at every signalized intersection.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.
