Alabama Freedom Center for the Blind (AFCB) is one of eight
rehabilitation programs in the nation that uses a Structured Discovery
(SD) approach to training blind people. SD instruction consists of
non-visual techniques, problem- solving strategies, experiential
learning, and confidence-building experiences. Our primary goal is
to guide adults who are blind through the necessary skills and
processes of adjustment to blindness so that the student can lead the

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want;
blindness is not what holds you back.
