Wanted to let you know about an event I'm helping to organize. Might be
a bit far from Athens, but please share if you know anyone who might be
interested. Please share.

Discover the joy of birdwatching—no binoculars needed!

Join us for Birdwatching By Ear, a special event for individuals who are
blind or visually impaired. This unique experience will be led by local
ornithologist Georgann Schmalz of Birding Adventures Inc.

🗓 *Saturday, May 17, 2025*
📍 *Dawson County Library*
342 Allen St, Dawsonville, GA 30534
🕘 *Starts at 9:00 AM*

*Cost: *Free

Georgann will teach us how to identify birds by the characteristics of
their songs—things like pitch, rhythm, tone, and repetition. You’ll learn
simple ways to remember bird calls and practice your listening skills.
After the 45-minute indoor session, we’ll take a short drive to Dawson
Forest for an accessible field trip where you can try out what you’ve
learned.

*Here’s a tip to prepare:*
Between now and the event, step outside when you can and just listen. Tune
into the chips, tweets, trills, and rhythms around you. Don’t worry about
knowing who’s singing—just start getting your ears and brain used to bird
sounds.

*Space is limited*, so please RSVP by *May 3rd* to reserve your spot.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams. Our collective power, determination,
and diversity achieve the aspirations of all blind people.
