The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.

Research Title: Design of Auditory, Tactile, and Interactive Ocean Data Exhibits

Being conducted by: Georgia Institute of Technology

Purpose of the Study

This study aims to improve understanding about how tactile and auditory displays can improve public understanding of and engagement with ocean data. Specifically, we hope to receive feedback on our interactive displays about local marine data from the Georgia Coast can make spaces like aquariums or marine science education centers more accessible for blind and low-vision (BLV) learners.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

The interview should take around 15-20 minutes. Participants will be asked a few introductory questions to gauge their prior knowledge on the ocean science concepts being tested, their familiarity with Gray's Reef marine

sanctuary, and relevant demographics such as ocean science training and any visual or auditory

impairments that might impact their interactions.

Participants will interact with one or more display prototypes, and the researcher may ask probing questions (e.g. "What did you expect to happen when you hit that button?" or "What information are you trying to find right now?"). Participants will be asked follow-up questions about their interaction experience, and researchers will

administer knowledge and/or usability questionnaires either orally or via digital survey. All interactions will be video and audio recorded using cameras and audio recorders.

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, Participants will be compensated $10 for their time.

Help us design interactive displays about marine sanctuaries!

We are researchers studying how to use tactile and auditory techniques to convey meaningful aspects of ocean science data to increase ocean literacy and access to ocean data. We are looking for individuals to participate in a 15-20-minute interview during which we will have you interact with one or more of our display prototypes with another individual to provide feedback and help us understand how we can improve them to teach people about ocean science and marine sanctuaries. This study is part of a Georgia Sea Grant funded project to increase accessibility to data about Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary off the Georgia coast.

To be eligible, you must be able to understand and speak English, be in the United States at the time of the session, and be 18 years of age or over. Studies will be conducted in person at the Tech Square Research Building in Atlanta, GA or at a mutually agreeable location. You will be compensated $10 for your time.
