Hi Jordan and fellow Federationists,
I'm happy to see that we have a bill that's being heard.
I have a few ideas I hope we will consider in our messaging. We want to
understand that there's a Republican state house and senate, so we want to
be sure to gear our messaging to that target audience.
I have the following ideas, which I hope will be helpful and some will try:
1. We want Braille education standards for blind students updated so
they're in line with current technologies and techniques, and also in line
with one or more red states if we can find at least one such example.
2. Like it or not, we want to steer clear of any mentions of diversity,
equity, inclusion, accessibility, DEI, DEIA, discrimination, etc.
3. We want to promote the conservative benefits of passing this bill,
primarily the idea that blind students armed with the tools they need to
succeed, including learning the current UEB code, are more likely to be
employed as adults and less likely to need welfare entitlement benefits such
as AHCCCS, SNAP and SSI. Ideally, we could work with someone in the national
office to get some data about this correlation between Braille and
employability.
I hope this helps. I'm all about the good old days of DEI&A, but, at least
in today's political climate, if we want any hope of legislative success,
we're going to have to find other ways to get the same messages across in
forms that Republicans just might be able to understand.
Unfortunately, Feb. 19 is a work day for me and I've already taken a lot of
time off recently, so I won't be able to do this, but I'll be there in
spirit, and if I can support in another way, such as emails or phone calls,
etc. then I'm happy to do it.
Could I please see a copy of the bill's text?
Thanks,
Darrell
