In 2022, we talked a lot about our collective story and the need for us to be the ones to tell the story of the blind, because we are the ones with the authentic lived experiences.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:12.0pt;page-break-after:avoid"><b><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:#404040">Scott Labarre:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Scott C. LaBarre, who was a longtime Federation member, a fierce leader in our movement, and a great friend to so many of us, passed away on Saturday, December 10. Scott was the long-time president of the Colorado affiliate, and also the National Association of Blind Lawyers. In his capacity as a member of the NFB, and as an attorney, Scott championed a lot of the legal battles the National Federation of the Blind waged in pursuit of independence and equality for the blind. He was instrumental in the passage of the Marrakesh Treaty, which we sometimes referred as “books without borders” because it gave the blind access to books on an international scope. Scott’s story is and authentic blind story and his legacy, which helped so many, will be everlasting.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in;line-height:106%"><span style="font-size:14.0pt;line-height:106%;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">A Celebration of Life to honor Scott will be held January 21, 2023, in Denver, Colorado, at 4:30 p.m., mountain / 6:30 p.m., eastern. The elected officials do not take office until January 9<sup>th</sup>. Which is a very short turnaround time for our Phoenix Seminar which will take place on January 17<sup>th</sup>. Because of all the changes at the State Capitol and because of the success that we had last year with our email campaign, this year’s Phoenix Seminar will consist of two parts. The main part will be an email campaign to all members of the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate. Additionally, there will be a few in-person meetings with key legislators and policy makers.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">Please join us on Sunday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m. for a Phoenix Seminar Great Gathering In. There, we will review the three policy initiatives we are asking the legislators and policy makers to consider. We will also provide some guidance on writing letters and making phone calls. The purpose of the redesign is to modernize and unify the NFB’s web presence across all of our affiliates and divisions.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt"><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:14.0pt">The migration should be invisible to you and our new website will go live sometime after the Washington Seminar. Building on its strong foundation, the amount awarded to each scholarship winner has been enhanced—making the experience even more inclusive, engaging, and meaningful for the thirty finalists. Each scholarship winner will receive $8,000. Participants in the contest should track the minutes they read Braille and log them at actionfund.beanstack.org. If you, or you know someone who wants to participate in the contest and has not yet registered, it is not too late. Individuals can sign up and participate in the contest until it ends on January 23, 2023. Remember that this year we have contests for youth as well as contests for adults of all Braille reading experience levels.
