AzTAP’s Lunch & Learn Series are FREE virtual 30-minute interactive
informational sessions highlighting unique assistive technology
related topics. In March, our Lunch & Learn focuses on:
Cooking Safely, Confidently & Independently with Vision Loss: Adaptive
Culinary Tools and Strategies
Introducing: The Blind Kitchen!
[Debra Erickson, the Blind Kitchen Founder, demonstrates how to freeze
and save flavoring in pre-measured portions.]
Cooking with vision loss is possible with the right tools and
strategies to make it a safe, confident and independent experience.
The Blind Kitchen has organized adaptive culinary tools and strategies
to make cooking a reality for any individual that wants to cook
regardless of their level of vision. The most daunting cooking areas
are explored in this training:
1. Heat: How to cook safely with hot foods and surfaces
2. Blades: How to safely use and manage sharp knives and other sharp tools
3. Efficiency and Organization: How to set up a work area with a
focus on safety, cleanliness, organization and avoiding waste.
For each category listed above, several adaptive culinary tools and
strategies will be exhibited, all with the vision-impaired cook
perspective.
