CUPERTINO - Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for Governor, today
announced the endorsement of Bill Jones, one of California's most respected
Republican leaders. Jones served as California Secretary of State from 1995
through 2002, and in his second term was one of two Republicans to win
statewide election
"I am honored to have the support of Bill Jones, one of our state's most
distinguished Republican leaders. As an Assemblyman, Bill successfully led
Californians to adopt one of the most crucial public safety laws in
California history, 'Three Strikes and You're Out'. As Secretary of State,
he implemented key measures to protect the integrity of our democratic
process by making our election and campaign reform systems cleaner, fairer
and more transparent,'' Whitman said.
"I find inspiration in Bill's leadership, dedication to Republican
principles and emphasis on making government more cost-effective,
transparent and relevant for Californians. His counsel and advice,
particularly on the water issue, will be instrumental in moving my campaign
ahead," Whitman added.
"We need a proven job creator to turn around our economy and get our
state moving in the right direction. Meg is exactly the person we need; she
has managed complex budgets, understands the issues facing small business
and has created thousands of jobs right here in California," Bill Jones
said. "Californians are fortunate to have such an accomplished person
running for Governor and I urge voters to study her plans for restoring
California and then go vote for her on June 8."
Bill Jones has an impressive resume as a Fresno-area rancher,
businessman, legislator and state constitutional officer. On his election
in 1994 as Secretary of State, he became the first Central Valley resident
to serve in a constitutional office in over a century. On his re-election
in 1998, he won 500,000 more votes than the Republican gubernatorial
candidate. He ran for governor in 2002 and, in 2004, he was the Republican
nominee for the U.S. Senate.
In 1994 as an Assemblyman, Jones received national acclaim when he worked
closely with Mike Reynolds to author California's immensely popular "Three
Strikes and You're Out" law. In an unprecedented act, Californians placed
an identical measure on the ballot that year, and it received 72 percent of
the vote He was the first Secretary of State to put campaign finance
information on the Internet and served as Assembly Republican Leader from
1991 to 1992.
With his rancher background, Jones has been an important ambassador to
boost California trade with international partners and is a nationally
recognized leader of agriculture, trade and water issues, including playing
a key role in advocating for a stable water supply system for California.
