LightHouse and Blind
Leaders Discover the Greatness Within
Zohar is a 17 year-old high
school senior. He lives with his parents, sister and beloved dog, Max. Like any
teenager, Zohar likes to hang out with his friends. He wants to be a
photographer and videographer. And though Zohar has been visually impaired his
whole life, he uses the latest low-vision solutions to enable him to excel while
 reaching towards his budding career goals.
Zohar started spending time with
us at the LightHouse in elementary school, when he discovered Enchanted Hills
Camp. He "grew up" through camp and says his favorite memories include learning
archery and playing goalball. He met many of his best friends at Enchanted
Hills and has looked forward to going back every summer.
In 2010, Zohar also became a
part of our new Blind Leaders Innovation Project. This summer, 16
blind youth and
adults worked with LightHouse staff, outside employers and
other mentors to address the barriers to employment they may face
because they are
blind or visually impaired. Zohar has heard all his life that his visual
impairment is a "disability," but his experience with the LightHouse has helped
teach him that his visual impairment is just one characteristic of a young man
filled with talent and potential.

He worked on it from
end-to-end, gathering footage, finding statistics and editing
countless revisions from the slides to the film. He especially enjoyed
finding the
right
music to match the movie, and chose a song written and performed by two of his
talented friends from Enchanted Hills, Shane and Derek Dittmar and their band,
Right v. Real (Derek and Shane are also visually impaired).

skills in team-building, using public transportation and being more flexible
and independent. I met new people and saw old friends. I already know what I
want to be when I'm older, and I got to do that kind of work this summer -
photography and videography. I'm excited about my senior year, especially the
film class I'm taking. One day, I want to work for Apple...or maybe the
