[Nfbc-info] WINDOWS 7

Hello,
I am using a Toshiba Netbook, with Windows 7 Starter. I have both
Window-Eyes 7.11 and JAWS 11 running with it. Both screen readers are doing
great with the new OS system. Make sure there is plenty of RAM. That is one
thing I do need to upgrade soon. My suggestion is to invest in Cathy Ann
Merther's tutorial in using Win7 with whichever screen reader you are
planning to settle on using. There is a learning curve and many new features
that are not in XP. However, if you have been using any of the Vista OS
systems, then there are many similarities. I jumped from XP to Win 7. Even
though you cannot set up the start menu in classic view, there is a method
to show the submenu items in a list view. That is in the start up
properties. Once you know the order on the task bar, there is a shortcut
keystroke to open a specific application. The instant search edit view is
great too. One mistake I made was to establish a standard user account with
a password. If I had to do all over again, I would just have an
administgrator account on the computer with its own password protection.
Once a standard user account is created, the administrator user account
becomes hidden, and it is extremely difficult to log on as the
administrator. The issue I am having is that Kurzweil 1000 V.12 will only
open when I run it as an administrator. So, until I learn how to access the
administrator user account, I will need to run it as the administrator. It's
just a little inconvenience. Also, I had difficulty finding the add/remove
option in the control panel. That has been renamed to "Program Features."
Once this option is clicked on, it is very easy to remove unwanted
pre-installed programs that are loaded on the computer when one first boots
it.
Sorry this is long, but I thought I would give you more details about Win 7
and what I have found with it so far.
Eileen

Has any fellow federationist who use JAWS for WINDOWS or WINDOWS EYES
upgraded to Windows 7 yet?
It is almost time to buy another computer for my home office and I am
thinking on getting Windows 7, but if the screen readers are not up to date
it might not work, what do you think?
