[Nfbc-info] new Calif. dog legislation Nfbc-info Digest, Vol 111, Issue 22

	Hello Dennis and all others:

In many respects I'm pleased to see California leading the way in an effort
to create a more welcoming atmosphere for dogs and their human companions.
Yes, there's another side. The same evening that I submitted the info. About
the new dog legislation I encountered what turned out to be a minor
misunderstanding at a restaurant.

I was asked if I would like to be seated on the patio. Because smoking
bothers me I typically do not sit in the outside seating areas of eateries.
When I declined the waitress informed me that am where dogs are allowed...
After she spoke to her manager I was seated inside --away from everyone
else. I foresee this scenario playing out more frequently for those of us
with service dogs. That's pretty much my only objection to this law.

I'd like to share with you another happening that involved a neighbor's pet,
me and animal control. After reading about this happening you may see how
the new law will only cloud animal control's judgment...

A few weeks ago I asked permission to give a treat to a neighbor's dog. No
problems. Then I asked permission to pet the neighbor's dog. No problems
--until the dog sank its teeth into the palm of my and nicked the bone and
the tendon. It took Animal Control officers four days to remove and
quarantine the neighbor's dog. The ultimate slap in the face came when an
Animal Control officer informed me that I was at fault for the dog biting
me! Yes, he told me that I was at fault because I went out of my way to pet
the dog! I unfortunately foresee similar scenarios playing out across the
golden state of California because of the new law and because of current
animal control laws that fault individuals for asking permission to pet a
dog and then being bitten...

Warmly,
Lisa Irving

  Hello to everyone,

Interesting: Governor Brown signs new dog law. I agree, it could present
problems for those of us with service dogs, especially our guide dogs, since
it's so necessary that our dogs definitely not be distracted during the time
they're working with us. However, I've been in San Francisco hundreds of
times, and been in restaurants where dogs sat right in the inside dining
area without there seeming to be any problem at all. I guess it remains to
be seen how well this will work out.
