"My eyes are handicapped, but -I'm not handicapped", said Luna Edwards, the
newest member of the NFBC, San Diego Chapter. While volunteering as a
Braille Teacher's Assistant at the San Diego Center for the Blind Luna
overheard some students talking about the National Federation of the Blind.
Luna wanted to learn more.
Luna and I spoke on the phone for almost half-an-hour. Until 2009 Luna lived
and worked in Jamaica. While growing up Luna dreamed of becoming a teacher.
Her life turned out differently than she planned. Instead of graduating from
high school she became a mother. Later, Luna became an entrepreneur
; Purchasing and selling produce to super markets. Her tenacity lead her to
the United States to live with her son and daughter-in-law. For two years
Luna studied and mastered grade one and grade two Braille. With pride and
enthusiasm Luna told me, "I am a Hadley student and I use braille to read
and write my assignments so I can earn my high school diploma".
When Luna learned about the B.E.L.L. program she was hooked! She's excited
about helping to start a BELL program in San Diego. It looks like Luna is
going to turn her dream of teaching into reality.
Warmly,
Lisa Irving
