Subject: Business Partner Forum - California Competitive Integrated
Employment (CIE)
In December 2014 the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR),
California Department of Education (CDE), and California Department of
Developmental Services (DDS) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to
further advance the State's "Employment First" Policy and other federal and
state laws to address employment in integrated settings, at competitive
wages, for individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental
disabilities (ID/DD).
The three departments are currently in the process of developing a blueprint
to support the achievement of competitive integrated employment (CIE) for
individuals with ID/DD. Engagement with business partners is a key component
to the development of the blueprint.
The departments have asked several major business partners who have been
successful in providing employment opportunities to individuals with ID/DD
to participate in a forum. The business partners will share what has worked
well, any training and employment challenges, and effective strategies to
overcome these challenges. The purpose of the forum is to identify how we
can work together to provide the necessary supports to successfully help
employ more individuals with ID/DD and to demonstrate to other business
partners how it can be done.
If you are a business partner who currently provides or who is interested in
providing employment opportunities to individuals with ID/DD, please join us
for this Business Partner Forum on Monday, August 31, 2015 from 10:00 a.m.
to 11:00 a.m.
This forum is a listening session; business partners will present on their
successes regarding CIE for individuals with ID/DD. All others are invited
to listen in to the forum.
During the forum, the business partners will share their ideas and
recommendations in response to the following questions:
* Aside from technical skills, what are the top five, non-skill
based, work readiness skills you are seeking from applicants?
o As you know, some job seekers with disabilities do not always present
these work readiness skills as a result of their disability. How can we work
together and provide the necessary support so that these individuals can be
successful in your business?
* What effective strategies for hiring and retaining an individual
with ID/DD, including autism, can you share?
o For those individuals who participate in High School work experience,
what are some strategies for moving from training into employment?
* In today's environment, many job seekers are required to complete
an online application process, for many of our consumers this process
presents a challenge. What suggestions do you have for helping these
individuals navigate the online application process?
o If you provide assistance to these individuals with the online process,
describe the level of assistance you are currently able to provide.
