Today, I have been reflecting on the life and leadership of a longtime
Federationist, Jan Kafton.

Jan became a member of the National Federation of the Blind when she was in
her twenties and looking for guidance on how to live life as a blind person.
She was elected to the Board of Directors in 1980 after showing leadership
qualities through her membership recruitment and fundraising efforts. She
was instrumental in organizing and supporting blind people who were learning
to adjust to life with diabetes. She learned how to monitor her blood level
by using one of the first talking glucometers. When Jan travelled for the
Federation she needed a suitcase just for the machine and hermedications.
Eventually, Jan was one of the first people to use an insulin pump.

When Jan moved to Fresno she was determined to reorganize the chapter and
called it the Central Valley Chapter. She helda professionally produced
variety show which helped to introduce the public in Fresno to the
philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind. Approximately six years
ago Jan suffered a major stroke which took a tole on her strength and
stamina. When she gained her strength back, again, Jan was determined to
continue the work of the Federation and build the Fresno Chapter.

The Central Valley Chapter owes Jan Kafton a debt of gratitude. We will
always remember her with fondness and love.

The National Federation of the blind knows that blindness is not the
characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the
expectations of blind people because low expectations create obstacles
between blind people and our dreams.

You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
