[Nfbc-info] Nfbc-info Digest, Vol 124, Issue 23

Good morning Rob

I empathize with your circumstances. I had a similar situation... I asked to
make an announcement at church. Sunday aquaintances and a close friend
offered to help me.

What I'm going to say will not likely address your immediate need. However,
I urge you to think about what I'm going to suggest.

First, is the referring medical doctor based at a hospital? If so, you may
be able to try the following: ask to speak to a hospital social worker.
Major hospitals don't publicize the the availability of taxi vouchers...
Some hospitals contract with cab companies. Typically, this service can be
provided to homeless individuals going to a shelter, persons with financial
hardships... and individuals without family or friends to assist with
transportation. Finally, you may want to talk to your insurance provider to
see if medical transportation is covered.

I have a few more thoughts on this topic. I find it challenging at many
levels to connect with sighted individuals... It has taken me almost three
years to build relationships with folks at church. Most of these folks are
what I term, Sunday friends. We chat for a few minutes at church. A few of
these folks are near and dear friends. I strive to keep these friendships
balanced by remembering not to always have my hand out wanting something.

I'll leave this conversation for now. Perhaps down the road I may write an
article about this particular topic...

Hope all went well,
Lisa Irving

I agree with everything said, but also, as a former dog user & hopefully a
future dog user, it is also important that all of our dogs are kept well
groomed. However, the law is the law, & what has been said here is very
true.

The difficulty with this position is that it is not the dog against which
you are discriminating. Under the law I as a blind passenger have the RIGHT
to be accompanied by my guide dog. You would be discriminating against me,
not the dog.

To put it another way, guide dogs do not have the right to ride in taxis or
rideshare vehicles. Blind people with or without guide dogs have that right
just as do all other persons. This is not a negotiable position.

Best Regards,

Michael Hingson

Some of us are discriminatory to dogs. We do not want anything with a tail
riding in our taxis, because the simple fact is that dogs shed hair all over
everything. If, I had a taxi, I would never never never never never let
anything with a tail

that pera transit would be fine. Then some other person (a mamager) said
that pera transit wasn't acceptable. They told me they want a name & number
of someone before they will even consider the procedure. I still think this
is a bunch of hogwash. I explained to them that pera transit drops me off @
