Subject: [Nfbc-info] San Diego Chapter Surfer Dudes

Hi All,

I thought I'd share with you about our adventures in surfing. Each year a
local Lions Club and multiple surf organizations sponsor a day of surfing
lessons for blind youth and adults. This is the second year chapter members
and friends rode the downtown Coaster to Encinitas where the surf event was
held. We coordinated with volunteer drivers to meet us at the train station.
Then the fun began!

There is no greater rush of euphoria than skimming and bouncing over an
undulating wave as it thrusts you toward shore!

That is why I am a body boarding junky. I'm not the only one who loves the
water and the freedom it offers each of us

Kyle Woodard and his soon-to-be wife, Tiffany, laid on their surf boards
enjoying each exhilarating wave. Tiffany and I, for a few seconds, made
it to a low crouching posture on our surf boards! Brian, a recently blind
father of three enjoyed beach breezes and the laughter of his 7 year old
daughter. A number of us played in the water with Brian's daughter. I
invited a friend's teenage daughter to spend the day at the beach and body
board with me and other body board enthusiasts.

The Lions Club grilled burgers and hotdogs for eighty blind persons and
seventy friends and volunteers. Then it was back to the waves! Changing
tides and winds altered the frequency and strength of the waves making for
many stellar surf and body board experiences.

I can hardly wait for next year's surf event! Meanwhile, you'll find me and
a friend frequenting the friendly Pacific Beach community and the waves
which beckon us and our boards.

From,

Lisa Irving
