Hello,
I am sending below to all of you 2 messages. The first one is from David
Andrews our list serve moderator and the second one is from Marcie
Carpenter, President of National Federation of the Blind of Washington. I
cried earlier and am now able to send out this message. Mike Freeman was
someone who helped me to realize that having Diabetes was just a fact of
life and just to move on. I will certainly miss talking to him. I love the
sound of his voice, wisdom and practicality towards life. I am very sad to
have to tell you of his passing away. See below for the announcement from
Marci Carpenter, President of the NFB of Washington.
Sincerely, Joy Stigile, President Diabetes Action Network of California
Those of you who have used NFBNET in its various incarnations will know that
Mike was an integral part of our success. He was an immediate and
enthusiastic user of the service, when we went live in June of 1991. In
those days you had to use a dial-up modem to get to our bulletinboard and
there were only a few discussion areas, and lots of files. Later on I asked
Mike, and Steve Jacobson, to assist with the monitoring of lists, as the
traffic and number of lists had increased dramatically. He did this, as a
volunteer for many years and could always be counted on to help. As you
know, he was President of the NFB of Washington for a number of years, and
was President of our Diabetics Division. He also served on our R&D
Committee, among many other things, for many years. Even if you hadn't met
Mike, you probably knew him from his extraordinarily deep voice, as a human
sign, at NFB conventions. I and others participated on a Conference Call
with him this past Tuesday, and he sounded good, so this came as a shock!
Mike, thank you, and we will miss you!
Dave Andrews

It is with a heavy heart that I write to share the news that our friend and
long-time Federationist Mike Freeman passed away last Saturday. As many of
you know Mike had been diagnosed with terminal cancer last summer and had
been undergoing treatment. In the last few weeks his spirits had been high,
his treatment had been going pretty well and he was planning to attend the
NFB Washington Seminar next month. In the end it was his heart that gave
out. Mike dedicated his life to helping blind children and adults realize
their dreams. Mike requested that there be no service so we will respect his
wishes. I will forward more information when I have it. Please keep Connie
and Shanti in your thoughts and prayers.
