NFBC,SD Chapter Trip to the Birch Aquarium

Yesterday, Saturday, June 18, several of the local chapter of the National
Federation of the Blind visited the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. Thanks to
the assistance provided by 2 Delta-Gamma Sorority alumnae, (Jennifer and
Cara),

and an aquarium volunteer, our visit was a great success! Kayla, the
aquarium volunteer gave us an hour long guided tour packed with fascinating
facts. Thank you Kayla for this generous contribution to our tour . We
realize that such a tour usually costs a great deal of money, and we deeply
appreciate the effort of the Birch Staff to make sure we were able to enjoy
the facility as much as possible.

At the end of the guided tour, We also had a chance to touch a starfish,
anemones, a sea cucumber, and a sea urchin. How cool is that? BTW, the
anemones felt like sticky plastic wrap. I thought the Sea Urchin felt like
a kind of cactus.

After the guided tour wrapped up, the 2 Delta-Gamma volunteers helped us
look at some of the exhibits that hadn’t been covered by Kayla. They did a
great job with describing the fish and reading signage.

No visit to such a venue is complete without a trip to the gift shop.
Again, Jennifer, and Cara did an exemplary job of telling us everything that
the gift shop had to offer.

We topped off the Birch Aquarium with lunch at the Splash outdoor café. I
was impressed with how affordable the food was.

We all had the same MTS bus to go home. On the way, Lisa thanked me for
setting up the visit and said she had enjoyed herself more than she had for
a very long time. The credit really goes to Birch Aquarium for providing us
with a discounted entrance fee and the fabulous tour guide as well as to
Cara and Jennifer who gave up their Saturday afternoon to work with us.

Respectfully,
