Hello all,
Again my roommate, Jason Eien informed me that he will not be able to attend our convention in Orlando, Florida taking place from July 10 to July 15 at the Rosen shingle creek resort. He said that he has to move closer to Henderson, and pay $650 extra, and so, that sends me back to the drawing board, and as a direct result of this I am a first timer who really wants to go, but I am in desperate need of a roommate. I have already reserved a room. If you or any guy you know is going, and needs a roommate please call me at (951) 454-7586 or email me at: jordanmirander at icloud.com.

As you can imagine, all energy and time at the national office is now focused on pulling the logistical details together for our best convention ever. I have heard about some great plans in our affiliates for bringing new people to the convention. Keep building and do not forget to urge preregistration.

> There is a National Federation of the Blind Fly-In in Washington, DC, on May 23, organized by the National Association of Blind Merchants, a Division of the NFB. The purpose is to target key congressional committee members. It is not essential that every state is represented. The committee members we are targeting are the states listed at the end of this article, so it is most critical to have members from those states.

> Convention is right around the corner, and with it come many fundraising announcements. In an effort to make the information more readily available to convention attendees and cut down on the number of listserv emails during the busy convention season, we?ve put together a fundraising announcement form for affiliates and national-level divisions. If you will be selling candy, raffle tickets, or other items to benefit the NFB at the convention and would like to let folks know, fill out the form at nfb.org/fundraising-announcement-form. All announcements will be posted at nfb.org/national-fundraising-announcements. If you have any questions, please contact the communications team at communicationsteam at nfb.org.

> Rideshare Testing:
> As per their settlement agreements with the NFB, both Uber and Lyft have agreed to implement new driver training requirements and policies regarding drivers? obligations to transport riders with service animals. On May 8, the NFB begins its Rideshare Testing Program to assess how successfully both companies are implementing these changes. If you use Lyft or Uber and have a service animal or travel with someone who has a service animal, your help with this testing process is critical. Please see nfb.org/rideshare for more information or contact Valerie Yingling at vyingling at nfb.org or (410) 659-9314, extension 2440.

> Senior Division Retreat:
> The National Federation of the Blind Senior Division is organizing a retreat for October 8-14, 2017, at Rocky Bottom Retreat and Conference Center. The cost is $325 per attendee, which covers room, board, training, activities, and ground transportation from Greenville to Rocky Bottom, but does not include transportation to and from Greensville, South Carolina, the nearest airport to the camp. Eligible participants are legally blind seniors ages fifty-five and older with a strong desire to learn alternative, nonvisual techniques taught by blind instructors, who are responsible for taking all medications independently, and who have the stamina to be actively engaged for five full days of activities.

> National Federation of the Blind Launches Ridesharing Testing Program
> Organization to Monitor Uber, Lyft Efforts to Accommodate Service Animals
>
>
> Baltimore, Maryland (May 8, 2017): The National Federation of the Blind today announced the launch of a program to test the effectiveness of ridesharing companies Uber and Lyft's efforts to accommodate passengers with guide dogs and other service animals. The NFB seeks the participation of blind people and other service animal users, or those who travel with them, across the United States and in Puerto Rico. Volunteers will be asked to fill out an online questionnaire to indicate whether or not they were denied service because of their service animals or if they were treated in a discriminatory or disrespectful manner. Both positive and negative experiences should be reported. Pursuant to agreements with the National Federation of the Blind, both Uber and Lyft are taking steps to prevent discrimination against, and improve service to, riders with service animals. The agreements require the National Federation of the Blind to provide feedback to the companies over a three-to-five-year
> period. The program is open to both members and non-members of the National Federation of the Blind. The online questionnaire is available in both English and Spanish.
>
> Mark A. Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said: "Companies like Uber and Lyft are empowering blind people to live the lives we want by providing fast, convenient and affordable transportation. This empowerment can only be real and complete, however, if all blind people, including those who use guide dogs, are able to access these transportation options when and where they need them, without fear that they will be refused service. My wife Melissa uses a guide dog, and consequently our family has occasionally experienced the refusal of transportation services, which violates the legal and civil rights of the blind and other people with disabilities. The National Federation of the Blind applauds the commitment by Uber and Lyft to improve their service to service animal users, and we look forward to working with these companies to ensure that their efforts to do so are meaningful and effective. I urge all service animal users to use our new online
> questionnaire often so that we can provide comprehensive feedback throughout the terms of our agreements with Uber and Lyft."
